Far too often a product is discarded as soon as and just because it’s reached its sell-by date.
The Daily Table - an initiative of Doug Rauch, former manager of Trader Joe's supermarket chain - buys these products and sells them as a low-cost, pre-prepared meal.
The project will begin in early 2014 in the popular district of Dorchester near Boston. Of course, selling food that’s passed its sell by date, isn’t new. Foodbanks have done this for years. However, what makes The Daily Table different is that it provides its customers with a quick and easy option and alternative to McDonalds. ‘It makes affordable food available for those members of society who wouldn’t otherwise buy it’, says Doug Rauch.
