Vegetables are being organically grown all over the world. Relatively, the most organic agricultural land is in Europe.
Global vegetable production has grown intensively, especially per capita. Vegetable production per capita has grown by 60% over the last 20 years. The growth is particularly strong in developing countries. And with that, organic farming is on the rise. This is how organic farming is divided over the continents.
Africa
The total area of Africa being farmed organically is 900.000 hectares (2007 data).
3% of the world’s organic agricultural land is in Africa. Total agricultural land is 1.160 million hectares.
The countries with the most land used for organic purposes are Ethiopia (840.308 hectares), Uganda (296.203), and Tunisia (154.793 hectares).
Asia
The total organic area in Asia is nearly 2,9 million hectares.
9% of the world’s organic agricultural land is in Asia. Total agricultural land is 1.660 million hectares.
Most organic land: China (1,6 million hectares) and India (1 million hectares).
Europe
The total organic area in Europe is nearly 7,8 million hectares.
24% of the world’s organic agricultural land is in Europe. Total agricultural land is 517 million hectares.
Most organic land: Italy (1.150.253 hectares), Spain (988.323 hectares) and Germany (865.336 hectares).
North America
The total organic area in North America is nearly 2,2 million hectares.
7% of the world’s organic agricultural land is in Northern America. Total agricultural land is 480 million hectares.
Most organic land: US (1.6 million hectares).
Latin America & Caribbean
The total organic area in Latin America & Caribbean is nearly 6,4 million hectares.
20% of the world’s organic agricultural land is in Latin America & Caribbean. Total agricultural land is 590 million hectares.
Most organic land: Argentina (2,7 million hectares), Brazil (1,8 million hectares) and Uruguay (930.965 hectares).
Oceania
The total organic area in Oceania is nearly 12,1 million hectares.
2,6% of the world’s organic agricultural land is in Oceania. Total agricultural land is 440 million hectares.
Most organic land: Australia (12 million hectares).
